Digital file sizes

  • US passport online renewal: JPEG or PNG, between 54 KB and 10 MB.
  • US visa (DS-160): JPEG, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or less.
  • Diversity Visa lottery: JPEG, exactly 600 × 600 pixels, 240 KB or less.
  • India e-Visa: JPEG, square, 350 to 1000 pixels, 10 to 300 KB.

What is a 2x2 photo?+

A square photo 2 inches by 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). It's the standard size for US passports, US visas and several other documents.

How big should the head be in a 2x2 passport photo?+

For a US passport, 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm) from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin.

How many pixels is a 2x2 photo?+

It depends on the document. A US visa digital photo must be between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, and the DV lottery requires exactly 600 × 600. Printed at 300 dpi, 2 inches is 600 pixels.

Can I print a 2x2 photo at home?+

Yes, on photo-quality paper at 100% scale. It's usually easier to print our 4×6 sheet, which holds several 2×2 photos, at a pharmacy photo kiosk and cut them out.
